On Sunday, Jan. 14, 2018, the J.Crew store at The Avenue East Cobb shut its doors for the last time. It was the first of five metro Atlanta closings that month, and the one at North Point Mall in Alpharetta followed on Jan. 27.
Which J.Crew stores closed in January 2018?
The New York-based retailer closed five Atlanta-area locations:
- Westside Provisions District (Jan. 14)
- The Avenue East Cobb (Jan. 14)
- Mall of Georgia in Buford (Jan. 27)
- North Point Mall in Alpharetta (Jan. 27)
- The Forum on Peachtree Parkway in Norcross (Jan. 27)
The Westside Provisions store had opened in late August 2013.
Which stores stayed open?
J.Crew said its stores at Avalon in Alpharetta, Lenox Square in Buckhead, Perimeter Mall in Dunwoody and Ponce City Market in Atlanta would remain open. The Ponce City Market store had opened in August 2015.
Why was J.Crew closing stores?
The closings were part of a wider retrenchment. In November 2017, the company announced plans to close at least 39 stores nationwide. It was restructuring while adapting to a crowded retail market. As of 2017, the company reportedly operated 575 stores. That total included J.Crew, Madewell and J.Crew Factory outlet locations.
What has happened since?
The brand later came back to the area in a different format. In September 2022, a J.Crew Factory store opened at North Point Marketcenter, along North Point Parkway near the mall. A Factory store also opened that August at Merchants Walk in East Cobb. In 2024, the company was also planning a Factory store at The Forum Peachtree Corners, a center where it had closed a full-line store in 2018.
